MAC 109 Small Contour Brush – Review

Product Description
Use on the face to apply, blend or contour powder products. Softly rounded dome tip delivers just enough color; smoothly blends color into the face. Of natural fibres.

So this is my review for the MAC 109 Contour Brush. I’ve had this brush for a couple years now, I had originally bought this brush because I was not happy with my MAC 187 stippling brush for liquid foundation. I had heard great reviews about the 109 brush and how well it applied liquid foundation so I had to give it a try.

Liquid Foundation

The main product I use this brush for is liquid foundation. It is a firm and dense brush so it buffs in the foundation so nicely. The brush itself is pretty small compared to the 187 brush so it does take me longer to apply the foundation, but after seeing the end result. it’s totally worth it. The one thing I absolutely hate about this brush is the shedding. This brush sheds like no other brush I have used. I literally have to pick off 4-5 hairs off my face after I’ve applied the foundation. I know this brush wasn’t made for liquid or cream products, but it is still annoying.

Contouring
This brush is amazing for contouring your temples and the hollow of the cheeks. It’s the perfect size for the job. It blends any harsh lines out perfectly so you don’t end up with that obvious contour line in the hollow of your cheeks.

Blush
I have tried using this brush for cream blushes, and it’s a big disaster. It sheds way too much. In general I don’t like using this brush for any type of blushes whether it’s a powder blush or a cream blush. This brush is way to dense and 9 times out of 10 your going to apply way to much product on your cheeks.

I think the MAC 109 brush is great brush for a make up collection but I don’t think it’s a must have. I think there are other great dupes out there for way cheaper. Coastal Scents has the kabuki on a stick brush for $5.95 Sigma has a great dupe for the MAC 109 brush as well. I can’t honestly tell you how those brushes are since I don’t own them, but I do think they are worth a try.

Great honest review, the brush does shed big time.

    • Thanks Jackie. Yes it’s a shedding machine.

  • This brush sounds pretty nice except for the whole shedding part. That’s always a big no-no for me when it comes to makeup brushes.

    • I couldn’t agree more. I can understand if it was an inexpensive brush but it’s pretty pricey.

  • I have had the same issue with brushes, it drives me crazy with the shedding, especially if you are going to pay good money like this, it should not be shedding in this manner… I always love your truthful reviews Simera xox

    • I know right Launna. I mean I like the coverage but come on it shouldn’t be shedding after paying so much for a single brush.

  • I have this brush, too! I have vowed to not buy MAC brushes anymore because all of mine end up shedding like crazy & they’re very overpriced.

    • I haven’t bought any MAC brushes for years there are so many other brush companies that sell similar brushes now that don’t break the bank.

  • I only have one eyeshadow brush by Mac and I bought another one for contouring… Great review Simera! Thanks for sharing! 😉

I never thought a MAC brush wud shed.. so bad and yes definitely there r better dupes.. well reviewed Simera!

    • Yes I haven’t had any other MAC brushes that shed only this one unfortunately.

  • I never bought Mac brushes before because the price is ridiculous! I am using Ecotools and Real Technique brushes and they do the work just fine without the crazy price. :-/

Mmm… I would love to try these brushes, cause you said they are good and I always trust your reviews. But then you say it sheds like crazy when using with liquid products and normally I don’t use liquid products, but sometimes… plus being it MAC, as you said, pricey! Nevertheless, I think they must be good, cause the brand is!

    • I like the coverage this brush provides but it’s definitely not worth the price since it sheds so much.

  • I love, love MAC products, but the shedding is a turnoff for me. Thank you so much for the review. It really helped.

    • My pleasure. I really like how flawless this applies foundation but not worth picking up tiny hairs from my face.

  • Very good review. I haven’t tried MAC brushes, so it was good to know.

I am such a newbie to make up! I never thought about using a brush for foundation and I seldom wear it because of the difficulty of wearing and having it look well. You just solved that!
